Structure Height and Depth Requirements

An elevator is required for structures or buildings 60 feet or more above ground level or 48 feet below ground level.

Demolition Sites Requirements

An elevator is required at demolition sites of seven or more stories or 72 feet or more in height.

Use of Endless-Belt-Type Manlifts

Use of endless-belt-type manlifts is prohibited.

Inspection, Testing and Permits

Before use, construction elevators must be inspected and tested in the presence of a Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) representative. A permit to operate is required.

Ropes Inspections

Ropes must be inspected at least once every 30 days, and records of these inspections must be kept.

Capacity Plate Posting

A capacity plate must be posted inside the car.

Operation Personnel

Elevators must be operated only by competent, authorized persons.

Installation Requirements

Installation must comply with 1604.

Landings

Landings must be provided at the top floor and at least at every third floor.

Landing Doors

Landing doors must be mechanically locked so that they cannot be opened from the landing side. A hook-and-eye lock is prohibited.

Height of the Hoistway Enclosures

For hoists located outside of a structure, the hoistway enclosures must be 8 feet high on the building side or the scaffold side at each floor landing and 8 feet high on all sides of the pit.

Hoistway Doors

Hoistway doors shall be at least 6 1/2 feet high. Solid doors must contain a vision panel. (See 1604.6(a) for specific requirements),1604.6(a).

Inspection and Maintenance

During inspection and maintenance, the car shall be operated at the slowest speed. In-car operating devices shall not function when car top operation is selected. The car top operating devices shall include an emergency stop button. The tops of cars shall be enclosed by a standard guardrail and toe board per 3209, 1604.24. Exception: See 1604.24(a)(3)(D).
