Welcome to the new Navitent!

Dust, Fumes, Mists, Vapors, and Gases

Start:Apr 24, 2024

Duration:5 Minutes

Goal: this Cognitive Trail will increase the ability to apply Cal/OSHA safety standards for the construction industry and reduce 'near misses'.

Description: This Navitent will increase the successfulness of applying OSHA's safety standards. It is designed to reduce the frequency of near misses re ... Read More

Summary: Safety Made Simple

Step 1

The next Steps cover Cal/OSHA safety regulations for Dust, Fumes, Mists, Vapors, and Gases. Where appropriate, we have referenced the code from Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations.

The topics we will cover in this Navitent are:

-Hazard Controls
-Respiratory Protection
-Proper Ventilation
-Common Sources of Hazards

After each of the next Steps, select the 'successful' response to indicate that you have read and understand the Step.

Select 'successful' now and proceed.

Step 2

Hazard Controls

Oxygen deficient atmospheres or harmful dusts, fumes, mists, vapors, or gases in concentrations sufficient to present a hazard to employees must be controlled when possible by removing the employee from the exposure, limiting daily exposure, or applying engineering controls.

Step 3

Respiratory Protection

Whenever the above controls are not practical or fail to achieve full compliance, respiratory protection must be used according to 5144.

Step 4

Proper Ventilation

Ventilation must comply with Article 4 in the General Industry Safety Orders (GISOs) if it is used as an engineering control method.

Step 5

Common Sources of Hazards

-Engine exhaust emission (carbon monoxide, NOx, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and others)

-Blasting (CO2, NOx, asbestos, silica, dust)

-Concrete and rock cutting (asbestos, silica, dust)

-Fuel storage tanks (harmful vapors)

-Lead abatement (lead particles, lead compounds)

-Asbestos abatement (asbestos fibers)

-Demolition (asbestos, silica, lead, dust, etc.)

-Welding (fumes)

-Painting and spraying (solvent, vapors, lead)

-Sand blasting (asbestos, silica, lead, dust)

-Harmful dust, fumes, mists, vapors, and gases from other sources

Step 6
