Summary: Investing in the fruit of self control.

Step 1

Read Galatians 5:22-23:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."

Are you ready to make an investment in the Fruit of Self Control?

Step 2

Read Matthew 5:5:

"Blessed are the humble, for they shall inherit the earth."

Select 'Successful' when you are finished.

Step 3

To the best of your ability, describe the difference between pride and humility and how the two play out in your day-to-day life.

Step 4

Go to the 'Docs' tab above and read the theologian William Law's description of the difference between pride and humility.

Select 'Successful' when you are finished.

Step 5

Law states:

"That the last trumpet may sound the great truth through the depths of eternity, that evil can have no beginning but from pride, and no end but from humility."

Ok, you're about to be asked a big question. Please take your time and fully consider it before you answer:

How much do you agree with Law that the battle between pride and humility in your life is eternal? That this silent, unseen battle has real, everlasting consequences on your soul and spirit?

Step 6

Law continues:

"The truth is this: Pride must die in you, or nothing of heaven can live in you. Under the banner of the truth, give yourself up to the meek and humble spirit of the holy Jesus."

Take a moment to get quiet. When you are ready ask Jesus to search you and reveal to you any source of pride that He would like to release you from right now.

Write down what you hear in the space provided (note: if you did not hear anything clearly, write down the first impression that comes to your mind).

Step 7

Law continues:

"Humility must sow the seed, or there can be no reaping in heaven. Don't look at pride only as an unbecoming temper, nor at humility only as a decent virtue. The one is death, and the other is life. One is all hell, and the other is all heaven. As much as you have pride within you, you have the fallen angel alive in you. As much as you have true humility, you have the Lamb of God within you."

Given what you received in Step 6, is there anything you would like to repent (express your sorrow) of? If so, you can do so in the space below.

Step 8

Law boldly explains:

"If you could see what every stirring of pride does to your soul, you would beg of everything you touch to tear the viper from you, even if it required the loss of a hand, or an eye."

How important is it to continually ask God to reveal to you how pride may be stirring in you, especially when you feel that you have been treated unjustly?

Step 9

Law concludes:

"If you could see what a sweet, divine, transforming power there is in humility, how it expels the poison of your nature, and makes room for the Spirit of God to live in you, you would rather wish to be the footstool of all the world than lack the smallest degree of it."

Compared to your answer in Step 3, how has your view of humility changed over the course of this Trail?

Step 10

How much has this Trail increased your level of self control?
